Upper Dolpa Trek, Se Phoksundo Lake

 


High Dolpo, aka « The Hidden Country », in Tibetan, Phoksundo Lake, the salt route and yacks caravans between Indian and Tibet. Trek under tents, dived into an isolated region, with a strong Tibetan culture.

Description

Day 1 : Arrival - Kathmandu
You will be received by our representative at Tribhuvan International Airport and transferred to the hotel.

Day 2 : Kathmandu
Guided tour of the Kathmandu’s valley and of its principle monuments.

Day 3 : Kathmandu - Nepalganj (400 m)
Flight to Nepalganj (1h30). Night in an hotel.

Day 4 : Safe day in case of bad weather

Day 5 : Nepalganj - Juphal - Dunaï (2200 m) - 4h
Flight to Juphal (35 min) and then trek to Dunaï.

Day 6 : Dunaï - Tarakot (2455 m) - 5h
You continue your immersion into South Dolpo. You discover the mythic monastery of Pematchöling.

Day 7 : Tarakot - Lahini (3260 m) - 7h
You begin the ascent of Tarap Chu valley. Arrival on Lahini.

Day 8 : Lahini - Surdum (3 620 m) - 5h
The pace is slow: paths are steep.

Day 9 : Surdum - Dho Tarap (4 040 M) - 4h
You continue your progression in Trap Chu valley. You foresse the Ribo Bhumpa monastery, which means you are getting near Dho Tarap.

Day 10 : Dho Tarap (4 040 m) - 2h
Rest day dedicated to visit of monasteries and acclimation.

Day 11 : Dho Tarap – Foot of Khyung La (4 550m) - 6h
You cross the swarming village of Tarap Chu. Then, you get to Tok Kyu and you camp will be at one hour of this village.

Day 12 : Khyung La (5 000 m) - Langmasia La (5 100 m) - 8h
This morning, you head to Khyung La. Nigh under tent, just after you manage crossing Langmasia La.

Day 13 : Langmasia La - Sela Mungchung La - 8h
You climb to Sela Mungchung La. You swiftly reach the other face of the col before setting up your camp for night.

Day 14 : Sela Mungchung La - Shey Gompa - 4h
You trek towards the remote village of Shey Gompa, which is one of the most religious one in Dolpo.

Day 15 : Shey Gompa - Mendok Ding - 8h
A long walking day which makes you able to leave Tar valley. You discover the Tsakang monastery. Then you reash Mendok Ding where you sleep.

Day 16 : Mendok Ding - Lar Tsa - 4h
You begin your descent until Lar Tsa.

Day 17 : Lar Tsa - Chunemba - 6h
You go along a ridge before getting involved in a steep descent which leads to Kangh Gompa. You reach Chunemba where you set camp.

Day 18 : Chunemba - Lac Phoksumdo - Ringmo - 6h
You go along Phoksumdo lake until Ringmo.

Day 19 : Ringmo
You enjoy this day to walk around Ringmo. Temples hold a lot of Buddhist paints and statues.

Day 20 : Ringmo - Hanke - 7h
You leave Ringmo and cross a crest (3780m). Then, you head to one of the highest Nepali fall. (300m). In the afternoon, you reach Hanke.

Day 21 : Hanke - Juphal - 6h
You find again the green valley and cross several villages.

Day 22 : Flight Juphal - Nepalganj - Kathmandu – Then free time

Day 23 : Kathmandu

Day 24 : International Departure

Day 1 : Arrival - Kathmandu
You will be received by our representative at Tribhuvan International Airport and transferred to the hotel.

Day 2 : Flight Kathmandu - Nepalgunj Hotel
Flight to Nepalgunj (1h). Breath-taking view over Manaslu, Annapurna and Daulaghiri massifs when weather allows it.

Trek Juphal - Suligad (2080 m) - Hanke (2500 m)
Flight to reach Juphal (45 minutes). This flight can be cancelled in case of bad weather. A hard path leads to the left side of Kakani. The camp is settled near the little village of Hanke.

Day 4 : Trek - Regi (2960 m)
After several ascents and descents, arrival in the afternoon in front of the tiny Regi’s village. Preparation of the camp.

Day 5 : Trek - Lake of Phoksundo (3640 m)
On the sides of the lake, where it is forbidden to swim due to religious believes (and of the temperature of the lake!)

Day 6 : Acclimation on the edge of Lake of Phoksundo (3640 m)
Rest day and acclimation on the edge of the lake.

Day 7 : Trek - Pine camp (3680 m)
Series of ascents and descents to eventually get to the other side of the lake.

Day 8 : Trek - Gand La Base camp (4620 m)
We reach Gand La Base camp.

Day 9 : Trek - Gand La (5300 m) - Shey (4330 m)
The award is great when you reach the col where flag priers are waving. We do get to High Dolpo ! Settling of the camp.

Day 10 : Shey and the surrounding areas
Walk to the little monastery of Tsakhang (4500 m).

Day 11 : Trek - Shey La (5110 m) - Namgung (4420 m)
Easy path which rises following a broad valley. Accessible ascent to Shey La.

Day 12 : Trek - Saldang La (4400 m) - Saldang (4050 m)
Settling the camp in Saldang. The opportunity to realize the gearwheels of Dolopo society. In the afternoon, walk in the numerous little villages which compound Saldang.

Day 13 : Trek - Confluence camp (3700 m)
Settling of the camp at the gates of Keheng Chu. Visit of small local villages.

Day 14 : Trek - Yangser Gompa (3860 m) - Confluence Camp (3700 m)
Full day dedicated to the discovery of surrounding areas. Ascent of the right side of Keheng Chu. Then we will continue to the village of Nishal, the “end of the earth”. In the afternoon, we get back to Confluence camp.

Day 15 : Trek - Saldang - Cha (4030 m)
We go up to Saldang before following our trip to the small village of Cha.

Day 16 : Trek - Jengla Phedi (4540 m)
From Rap monastery, wonderful views over the valley. Then, we leave the last habited places of High Dolpo.

Day 17 : Trek - Jengla (5130 m) - Tokkyu (4200 m)
A splendid panorama over the Dhaulagiri massif. The camp is settled near Tokkyu.

Day 18 : Trek – Do valley - Shibchog (4180 m) - Pang La Base camp (4440 m)
Crossing of several splendid villages. In the afternoon, ascent towards Pang La. The camp is settled around 4440m.

Day 19 : Trek - Pang La (5440 m) - Yak Karka (4780 m)
Ascent et descent until the same river which flows at the foot of Yangser Gompa. The camp is settled towards the next col.

Day 20 : Trek - Chharka La (5030 m) - Chharka (4310 m)
Ascent to Chharka col and then easy but long descent towards Chharka. Small old fortified village, we settle camp between the ancient and the new village.

Day 21 : Trek - Nirwa La Base camp (4760 m)
Ascent of the steep valley until the second camp place, which is a broad high pasture.

Day 22 : Trek - Nirwa La (5100 m) - Lungpa La (5470 m) - Lanio Lungpa (5250 m)
The ascent to Nirwa La follows a very large valley. From the col, you will enjoy an aerial view over the near Dhaulagiri. Steep descent towards the highest camp of the trip: 5250m. Take care of the cold night !

Day 23 : Trek - Kok La (5180 m) - Sangdag (3760 m)
After some impressive passages, you will ascent towards the right side until the small village of Sangdag.

Day 24 : Trek - Phalegaon (3160 m)
During this day, the view on the valley towards Lo Mantang (Mustang’s capital) is remarkable. We are at the gates of this ancient kingdom. The shift of the vegetation is absorbing.

Day 25 : Trek - Dangar La (3470 m) - Jomosom (2790 m)
Last step of the trek. Lodge in Jomosom. For the braver trekkers, there is an opportunity of going to the awesome village of Marpha (3h).

Day 26 : Flight - Pokhara - Kathmandu
Flight which can be cancelled in case of bad weather.

Day 27/Day 28 : Kathmandu
Free day in Kathmandu to discover this brilliant valley. Safe day in case of bad weather.

Day 29 : Kathmandu
Free day. Transfer to the airport according to everyone’s hour.
