This trek takes you deep into the Upper Mustang, where ancient monasteries, cave dwellings, and walled cities transport you back in time.

Starting from Lo Manthang, the medieval capital of Mustang, the journey unfolds through remote villages like Yara and Ghara, where you witness centuries-old traditions and breathtaking views of eroded cliffs and canyons. A key highlight is the Luri Gompa, a 13th-century cave monastery famous for its Buddhist murals and spiritual significance.

This trek is ideal for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, blending natural beauty with deep cultural immersion. Walking through Mustang’s mystical landscapes, adorned with prayer flags and chortens, provides a glimpse into the region’s unique heritage, untouched by modernity.

Description

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Airport pickup by trek organizer or local team member.Transfer to a hotel in Thamel or similar central area.First impressions of Kathmandu: busy streets, colorful markets, rich cultural mix. Rest and trek briefing in the evening.

Day 2: Cultural Tour of Kathmandu Valley
Guided sightseeing of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) – panoramic view of the valley.Boudhanath Stupa – the largest stupa in Nepal. Pashupatinath Temple – sacred Hindu temple on the Bagmati River. Patan or Bhaktapur Durbar Square – ancient palaces and temples. Final trek prep and optional shopping for gear.

Day 3: Drive to Pokhara (820m)
Scenic private drive (~6–8 hours) along the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. Arrival in Pokhara, Nepal’s adventure capital. Lakeside walk by Phewa Lake and views of the Annapurna range. Hotel check-in and dinner.

Day 4: Flight to Jomsom (2700m) – Trek to Kagbeni (2810m)
Short but spectacular mountain flight (~20 mins).Start trekking north along the Kali Gandaki River.each Kagbeni – a Tibetan-influenced village with ancient architecture. Views of Tilicho Peak and Nilgiri North.

Day 5: Kagbeni – Tangbe – Chuksang (2980m) (~5h)
Enter Upper Mustang (restricted zone).Visit Tangbe: whitewashed houses, orchards, and chortens.Trek through windy, barren terrain to Chuksang.First real immersion in Mustang’s desert landscape.

Day 6: Chuksang – Dajori La (3660m) – Samar (~4h30)
Steep climb to Dajori Pass with wide Himalayan views.Arrival in Samar: village surrounded by red rock cliffs.Explore local caves and Tibetan prayer walls.

Day 7: Samar – Ranchung Cave – Syangboche – Gheling (3570m) (~7h)
Visit Ranchung cave, an ancient meditation site.Trek through high passes and plateaus with views of Annapurna and other peaks.Stay in Gheling, a village known for barley fields and Tibetan-style homes.

Day 8: Gheling – Ghemi (3520m) (~4h)
Climb to Nyi La Pass (~3950m) and descend to Ghemi.See Nepal’s longest mani wall (Buddhist prayer wall). Ghemi is surrounded by dramatic red cliffs.

Day 9: Ghemi – Lo Gekar Monastery – Dhakmar (3500m) (~6h)
Visit Lo Gekar Gompa, one of the oldest monasteries in Nepal. Trek to the striking red cliffs of Dhakmar. Learn legends of Guru Rinpoche and explore cave gompas.

Day 10: Dhakmar – Charang (3560m) (~5h)
Walk through canyons and plateaus to Charang. Visit large red monastery and ancient dzong (fort). Experience Mustang’s Tibetan Buddhist culture firsthand.

Day 11: Charang – Lo Manthang (3840m) (~3h)
Short trek to Upper Mustang’s capital: Lo Manthang. Explore this walled city with palaces, gompas, and narrow lanes. An optional horse ride around the city.

Day 12: Explore Lo Manthang
Day hike to Chhoser and Nenyul. Visit Nyphu Gompa, Jhong Caves, and painted monasteries. Cultural immersion: interact with locals, learn about the last king of Lo.

Day 13: Lo Manthang – Dhi – Yara (3530m) (~6h)
Begin the return route via a new path. Cross a high ridge with sweeping Mustang views. Reach Yara, a village with unique mud houses and ancient cave dwellings.

Day 14: Yara – Luri Gompa – Return to Yara (~5h round trip)
Visit Luri Gompa, a 13th-century cave monastery with Buddhist murals. Explore Tashi Kabum, known for its painted caves. Return to Yara for overnight stay.

Day 15: Yara – Tangge (3240m) (~7h)
Trek through high passes and dry riverbeds. Visit Tangge, a remote and beautiful village with chortens and mani walls. Fewer trekkers; more authentic experience.

Day 16: Tangge – Chuksang (3020m) (~9h)
Longest trekking day. Re-cross ancient paths via Paha Pass (4200m). Reach Chuksang for a well-earned rest.

Day 17: Chuksang – Muktinath (3670m) (~6–7h)
Climb to Gyu La Pass (4050m) – stunning views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri. Arrive at sacred Muktinath Temple – revered by Hindus and Buddhists. Visit 108 water spouts and eternal flame.

Day 18: Muktinath – Kagbeni – Jomsom (2710m) (~6h)
Final descent through arid landscapes and villages. Walk along the Kali Gandaki riverbed to Jomsom. Celebrate the trek’s end.

Day 19: Flight Jomsom – Pokhara
Short mountain flight back to Pokhara (weather dependent).Free afternoon to relax: cafes, spa, boating on Phewa Lake.

Day 20: Spare Day in Pokhara
Buffer day in case of bad weather (alternate: jeep ride from Jomsom).Optional activities: paragliding, zip-lining, Peace Pagoda hike, and massage.

Day 21: Return to Kathmandu (by flight or drive)
Travel back to Kathmandu. Final hotel stay in Thamel or Boudha area. Evening souvenir shopping or farewell dinner.

Day 22: Free Day in Kathmandu
Explore more sites (Garden of Dreams, Asan market).Optional spiritual activities (yoga, meditation). Buffer day for flexibility.

Day 23: International Departure
Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport.Final goodbyes and end of journey.
